Medium — how to connect

Before you start

• A Medium account that already has an existing Integration Token from BEFORE 2025-01-01 — Medium closed the API to new integrations on that date and no longer issues new tokens to accounts that never had one, so this connection is impossible for brand-new Medium users.
• Access to that account's Settings → Security and apps → Integration tokens page to retrieve (or re-copy) the token string — Medium only shows the full token once at creation time, so if it was never saved you cannot recover it, only revoke and you'd then be locked out entirely.
• Willingness to publish as an individual author only — this integration posts under a single Medium profile (personal account), not a Medium Publication, so there is no publication/organization posting target to prepare.
• Decide the default publish status up front (draft, public, or unlisted) — posts default to draft in Medium's account meta so nothing goes live by accident; explicitly set publishStatus to "public" if immediate publishing is wanted.

   Check whether you already have a Medium integration token

   Medium stopped issuing new integration tokens on 2025-01-01, so this only works if you minted one before that date or still have it saved.

   Sign in to Medium and go to medium.com/me/settings/security.

   Locate your existing integration token

   Under "Integration tokens," find a previously issued token (labeled by the description you gave it) — Medium will not let you request a new one if you have none.

   Copy the token value

   Copy the full token string exactly as shown; treat it like a password, since Medium only displays it in full at creation time.

   Paste it into this app's "Integration token" field

   Enter the token in the "Integration token (Settings → Security and apps)" field when connecting the Medium account.

Troubleshooting

Cannot find any "Integration tokens" option under Settings → Security and apps, or the page gives no way to generate a new one.

Medium stopped issuing new integration tokens to accounts on 2025-01-01. If the account never generated a token before that cutoff, there is no way to connect it — this integration only works for accounts with a pre-existing token. There is no OAuth signup path for new apps either.

Connect fails immediately with an authentication/401-style error from GET /v1/me right after pasting the token.

The token was likely mistyped, has trailing whitespace, or was revoked/regenerated on Medium's side (regenerating invalidates the old string). Re-copy the exact token from Settings → Security and apps and paste it fresh — tokens are usually shown only once, so if it's lost you must generate (if still possible) or use another already-authenticated account.

Posts consistently show up as private drafts in Medium instead of going live, even though the tool reports "published" successfully.

This is expected default behavior, not a bug: publishStatus defaults to "draft" so nothing posts publicly by accident. Set account.meta.publishStatus to "public" (or "unlisted") if immediate live publishing is wanted.

Trying to edit or delete a post after it was published, or trying to re-sync/pull existing posts back into the tool.

Medium's API is frozen and create-only — there is no edit, delete, or read-back endpoint available. Any correction must be made manually on Medium's own site; treat each publish as final/one-way.
